I have taught full time high school English for 10 years. I am Ivy League educated (full scholarship to Columbia’s Education program), and I have taught in multiple states. I am well trained and qualified to work with students at all ends of the academic spectrum: gifted, ADHD, learning disabled, or at level and just not digging English. After working with me, students show improvement in reading comprehension, writing skills and confidence. In addition, they are apt to find their best future placement for career and personal growth. For some this is entrance to Harvard, Stanford or Seattle University. For some this is a successful completion of a diploma. Each of us has our own unique path, and success means different things to different people. I tutor because I love helping young people grow. Contact me below to see how I can help.
Tutoring Tailored for You
Each one hour session provides an individualized lesson tailored to your needs. Most one hour sessions cover:
1. Grammatical &/or stylistic focus lesson (sentence-level all the way to long form essay structure) unique to his or her writing.
2. Writing &/or reading practice based on this lesson.
3. Help with current schoolwork, both immediate and long-term projects. Mostly this means:
* Evaluating teacher requirements for assigned work.
* Pinpointing difficulties and learning unique tools to troubleshoot.
* Examining connections between thought processes and writing processes to foster overall clarity.
* Goal setting & study skills for completion of long term projects.
* Practicing strategies to going above and beyond in writing.
4. Review of concepts covered in previous meeting & suggested focus points moving forward.
Your initial session is only $75. In this 75-90 minute session, I will evaluate your needs, and make suggestions based on time, budget and location. I prefer to work with students once or twice weekly in coffee shops and libraries, but I am available for solo lessons too. Also, enquire about discounts for bundled or small group lessons.
“Xan’s Creative Words class I took in my junior year of high school really opened my mind to the concept of poetry. My only true knowledge of poetry prior to her class was of things I’ve found for myself, much less the basic overviews of American poetry which my previous generic English classes glossed over. For the first time I truly witnessed all kinds of different styles from all kinds of different authors I’d never really heard of before, and I really enjoyed it! Xan managed to teach me in a way that got me further interested in the subject, and since I took her class, I’ve written and performed on my own, and even participated in a few poetry slams. To top it off Xan is an inspiring individual of whom I consider a great influence.”
— Eric Whitehead, AMHS class of ’14, University of British Columbia
“Xan changed the way I view poetry, writing, and literature by creating a safe environment where I could explore, create, and really think instead of having ideas pushed upon me. I learned more than I ever had in an English course because she allowed me to explore my own thoughts, emotions, and feelings about each piece of literature I came across; And through this exploration, I genuinely understood where the author was coming from. However, the knowledge I gained about each individual poem or author was not as important as the life lessons I gained from Xan. I learned how to explore my inner thoughts and express them in a way that turned those emotions I felt into artful pieces of creative writing that I could share with the rest of the world. I felt more confident in my abilities to express myself, and this confidence transcended into many other aspects of my life helping me grow in multiple ways, not only in the English classroom”
— Veda Gupta, AMHS class of ’14, Rice University
